More About Daniel

After over 20 years working as a successful graphic designer and creative director in the marketing/advertising world, I finally decided to scratch an itch I had for quite sometime — working with older adults. I had been wanting to contribute in some way, but I struggled with what to do and how to do it. A good friend of mine was on the board at Lifespan at the time and encouraged me to enroll in the Gerontology program at St. John Fisher/Lifespan. I LOVED it! And I haven't looked back. I graduated in June 2010 from the program.
While enrolled in the program, it quickly dawned on me — technology! It is too often a major gap in knowledge for so many older adults. So after months of research and learning about the challenges associated with aging, I decided to start a business teaching basic computer, internet, email, and social networking skills to seniors. Months of writing ensued — building the curriculum, testing the model and teaching classes. What developed was a proven method that breaks down the barriers of fear and intimidation that so many older adults feel towards technology. The keys to the method? Patience, passion, enthusiasm, and a true understanding of the needs of my students. Feedback has been incredible and I REALLY enjoy it — it's extremely rewarding. And with the tsunami of baby boomers quickly approaching, not only does it make good business sense, but it also allows me to act on something that has been knocking at my door for years. This also gets me back to one of my first loves — teaching. While living in Greenville, SC, I taught design at the Visual Arts Institute for many years. I knew someday I would return to teaching, but little did I know that my students now would be 65+. So far, my youngest student is 59, my oldest, 97. I have found teaching this generation of adults to be the most rewarding and fulfilling experience of my career. |
